Hey r/startups,

I want to share something I've been building and the honest lessons from it.

**The problem I was solving**

Sahibinden.com is Turkey's dominant classifieds platform — think Craigslist + eBay combined, for a country of 85 million people. The problem: they charge sellers. Every listing costs money. The UX hasn't meaningfully changed since ~2012. There's no real competitor.

I kept paying their fees and thinking: why doesn't a free alternative exist?

So I built one. It's called Tagilan (tagilan.com).

**What I built**

- Free listings across all categories (real estate, vehicles, electronics, jobs, etc.)
- A dedicated real estate vertical called Tagemlak with m², room count, and location filters
- Corporate accounts for real estate agencies
- Optional "featured" upgrades (49₺ / 99₺) as the revenue model — basic posting always free

**The honest lessons**

1. **Competing with a monopoly is a distribution problem, not a product problem.** Sahibinden has network effects. A better product isn't enough — you need a reason for sellers to post on both platforms simultaneously. I'm still figuring this out.

2. **Free is a feature, but not a moat.** "It's free" gets people to try it. It doesn't make them stay. The real moat is liquidity — buyers need sellers and vice versa. Chicken-and-egg is real.

3. **Vertical-first might be the answer.** Tagemlak (the real estate vertical) gets more traction than the general platform. Focused verticals let you win a niche before going broad.

4. **Turkish internet users are underserved by modern UX.** The bar for "better than Sahibinden" is genuinely low. Mobile-first, fast, clean — that alone is a differentiator.

**Where I am now**

Early days. Submitted to Product Hunt, building off-site presence, doing this Reddit post as part of a structured outreach plan.

Happy to answer questions about building a marketplace in a monopoly market, the Turkish tech ecosystem, or anything else.

Sahibinden ücret alıyor, biz almıyoruz — Tagilan'ı denediniz mi?

Merhaba r/Turkiye,

- İlan vermek her zaman ücretsiz

Temel ilan verme her zaman bedava.

Deneyin, geri bildirim verin. Her türlü eleştiriye açığım.

Turkey classifieds for digital nomads: how to find apartments, sell gear, and navigate the local market

Hey r/digitalnomad,

I've seen a lot of posts here about moving to Turkey — Istanbul, Antalya, Izmir are all popular bases. One thing that comes up repeatedly: how do you buy/sell stuff locally?

I'm a Turkish founder and I built a free classifieds platform called Tagilan (tagilan.com) specifically because the dominant platform (Sahibinden.com) charges fees and has a terrible UX. Here's a practical guide for nomads, plus some context on how the local market works.

---

**Finding an apartment in Turkey as a nomad**

The main platforms are Sahibinden.com and Emlakjet. Both have listings but:
- Sahibinden charges landlords to list, so some good listings never appear
- Emlakjet is cleaner but still fee-based
- Most landlords also post on WhatsApp groups and Facebook groups

**Tagilan's real estate vertical (Tagemlak)** is free for landlords to list, which means you might find listings that don't appear elsewhere. Filter by city, district, m², and room count. Istanbul listings are most dense; Antalya and Izmir growing.

**Practical tips for renting:**
- Short-term (1–3 months): Airbnb or Facebook groups ("Istanbul Expat Housing", "Antalya Digital Nomads")
- Medium-term (3–12 months): Sahibinden + Tagilan + local real estate agents
- Agents typically charge 1 month's rent as commission — negotiate
- Contracts in Turkish are standard; get a translation

---

**Buying/selling electronics and furniture**

This is where Tagilan really shines for nomads. Common use cases:
- Buying a desk/chair/monitor when you arrive, selling when you leave
- Buying a local SIM-compatible phone
- Selling gear before a long trip

On Tagilan: post in the Elektronik or Ev Eşyaları categories. Listings are free. Most transactions happen via WhatsApp after initial contact on the platform.

**Safety tips:**
- Meet in public (cafes, shopping mall lobbies)
- Cash is still king for small transactions
- For electronics, test before paying
- Larger items: use the platform's contact form, don't share personal number until you've verified the listing

---

**Language barrier**

Tagilan's interface is in Turkish, but Chrome auto-translate handles it well. Most sellers in Istanbul and tourist areas speak basic English. For negotiations, Google Translate voice mode works fine.

---

**TL;DR**

- Tagilan (tagilan.com) = free Turkish classifieds, good for apartments (Tagemlak), furniture, electronics
- Sahibinden = dominant but charges fees
- Facebook groups = good for expat-to-expat transactions
- Always meet in public, test electronics before paying

Happy to answer questions about living/working in Turkey.
